MKYRA Events
Missouri Kansas Youth Rodeo Association aims to put on events that are designed to be stepping stones for youth throughout their rodeo career.
The goal will forever be for contestants to have fun, gain discipline, understand the sport of rodeo, and to gain knowledge to take with them into life or a career in professional rodeo.
Dummy Roping
Event will consist of a bale of straw laid flat with a calf head attached. Each contestant must throw one loop and catch the dummy head without crossing the designated line. Each contestant that catches will move to the next round and throw another loop from twelve inches farther back from the first line. The last roper standing wins.
Mounted Dummy Roping
Event will consist of two bales of straw stacked high with a calf head attached. Each contestant must throw one loop and catch the dummy head without crossing the designated line.
The fastest time wins.
This is a timed event.
Saddle Bronc Riding
Each contestant will try to ride a horse (of appropriate size for age division) for 6 seconds in juniors and 8 seconds in seniors. After the competitor gives the nod, the horse will be let out of the chute and if the contestant rides for 6 seconds they will receive a score.
Participants must ride with a saddle setup and hold onto a rope rein with one hand.
Protective helmet and vest are required.
Bareback Bronc Riding
Each contestant will try to ride a horse (of appropriate size for age division) for 6 seconds in juniors and 8 seconds in seniors. After the competitor gives the nod, the horse will be let out of the chute and if the contestant rides for 6 seconds they will receive a score.
Contestants must ride with a bareback rig and hold with one hand.
Protective helmet and vest are required
Mutton Busting
Each contestant will try to ride a sheep for 5 seconds after it is released from the chute. Helpers are encouraged in the chute. If the contestant rides for 5 seconds they will receive a score.
Protective helmet and vest are required.
This is a scored event.
Chute Dogging
The competitor starts the event in a bucking chute with the steer. When the chute gate opens, the competitor must bring the nose of the steer to the line which is 10 feet out and wrestle the steer to the ground with all four hooves out.
Time limit: 60 seconds.
Steer Wrestling
Also known as bulldogging is a rodeo event in which a rider mounted on a horse chases a steer, drops from the horse to the steer and then wrestles the steer to the ground by grabbing its horns and pulling it off balance so that it falls to the ground. The fastest time wins.
This is a timed event.
Calf Riding
A rough stock event in which the competitor climbs onto a steer in a chute and uses one hand to hold on to a leather rigging that is strapped around the steer. When the chute gate opens, the steer bursts out and starts trying to buck the rider off. The rider must stay on the steer for 6 seconds to receive a score.
A protective helmet and vest are required.
This is a scored event
Steer Riding
A rough stock event in which the competitor climbs onto a steer in a chute and uses one hand to hold on to a leather rigging that is strapped around the steer. When the chute gate opens, the steer bursts out and starts trying to buck the rider off. The rider must stay on the steer for 8 seconds to receive a score.
A protective helmet and vest are required
Bull Riding
A rough stock event in which the competitor climbs onto a bull in a chute and uses one hand to hold on to a leather rigging that is strapped around the steer. When the chute gate opens, the bull bucks out. The rider must stay on the steer for 8 seconds to receive a score.
A protective vest and helmet are encouraged.
This is a scored event.
Pole Bending
The contestant rides their horse down to the end of six poles then runs a serpentine through the six poles back, down and back and then races back passed the timer and entry gate all while not knocking any poles over.
This is the fastest time, wins.

Tie Down Roping
The horse and roper start in the roping box and the event begins when the calf breaks the barrier. The rider will rope the calf around its neck, dismount the horse, run to the calf, flank it and restrain it by tying three legs together.

Breakaway Roping
An event where the calf is roped but not thrown and tied. The rider will start in the roping box and time will start when the barrier is broken. The rider will rope the calf around the neck and stop. The rope which is tied with a string pulls tight and breaks loose. This will stop the timer. The fastest time wins the event.
This is a timed event
Ribbon Roping
A team event with one mounted rider and a contestant on foot. The rider will start in the roping box and the runner may start anywhere in the arena. The event starts when the barrier is broken. The rider will rope and dally off the calf while the runner grabs the ribbon off the calf’s tail and races back to the finish line.
Each team must have one boy and one girl.
This is a timed event
Team Roping
This event has two riders (a header and a heeler) chasing a steer down the rail. The header ropes the steer (generally around the horns) and dallys to the horn of the saddle to turn the steer to the left for the heeler to rope the hind feet.
The “header” or “heeler” is the contestant in this event and will receive the time and the points individually.
Goat Tying
The contestant rides their horse down to a tethered goat, dismounts, catches, throws, and ties any three of the goat’s legs together. The goat must stay tied for six seconds after the contestant has backed away from the animal.
If the goat becomes untied before 6 seconds have passed, the rider receives a no score.
This is a timed event.
Time limit: 45 seconds.
Goat Tail Untying
The contestant rides their horse down to a tethered goat, dismounts, and catches the goat to pull off a ribbon tied to the goat’s tail. They then run across the line to stop the stopwatch.
This is a timed event.
Time limit: 45 seconds
Barrels
An event based on speed. The contestant rides their horse around a cloverleaf pattern without knocking over a barrel.
This is a timed event.
